Stephen Rhys

Our Founder and Conductor: Stephen Rhys

Our conductor, Stephen Rhys, was Professor of Music at the Royal Academy for 30 years. He was awarded an MBE for his services to music in the Queen's Birthday Honours list, 2004. An East Sheen resident, he founded the Putney Choral Society in 1947 and the City Philharmonic Choral Society in 1955. He said: "I was very surprised. I felt I had worked hard but a lot of people work hard, why pick me? But secretly I was pleased."

Mr Rhys believes he is surrounded by people with musical talent making it easy to form choirs and keep them going. He demonstrates this with his involvement in music at Christ Church in East Sheen for the last 28 years.

And at 77 years old, he insists: "The fire has not died down yet, I have maintained my enthusiasm for it."

He spent a year teaching music in Xinjiang province, Western China, and has five children and four grandchildren (including three professional musicians).

Stephen appeared on the Today Programme with members of Putney Choral Society in April 2009.
